Soldiers were sometimes sent to "no man's land" to repair barbed wire and to listen to enemy information. In some occasions enemy soldiers would find each other and would have to fight hand to hand combat. They weren't able to fire on each other because the others in the trenches would shoot to kill anything in "no man's land".
